E-books just aren’t as satisfying as print books, even to some millennials by Michael

In today’s Salon.com there’s a great article by Emma Silvers, E-reader-revolt: I’m leaving youth culture behind. Subtitles “At 26, I’m part of a generation raised on gadgets, but actual books are something I just refuse to give up” I couldn’t resist reading it several times. Here’s the core of the argument: And yet, I know [...]

The Death of Newspaper Obituaries by Brian Herzog

One function of public libraries is to be a repository for community history. The extent to which a library can do this will vary, but at the very least, the library has holdings of the local newspaper, which patrons can use to look up obituaries of local residents. But the reality of this is changing. [...]

Using Games to Teach Problem-Solving & Strategy by Rebecca Jones

University of Florida has followed University of California at Berkeley in offering a course using a web game to teach problem-solving and strategizing. But whereas Berkeley’s course was a pass/fail-not-part-of-student-grades course, this course is a 2-credit honors course. YES! “21st Century Skills in Starcraft” is an eight-week class that “does not teach about Starcraft,” but combines weekly [...]

What’s the deal, JSTOR? by Meredith Farkas

I’ve written some posts in the past about vendors that have done some pretty slimy things in the name of making a profit. At least that makes sense to me. That’s their model — they’re profit-driven. Then there’s JSTOR. JSTOR is not an EBSCO or an Elsevier. JSTOR is a non-profit. JSTOR is a “service [...]

Get More (important things) Done by Lori Reed

Earlier this month I presented an online training session to the great folks at NEFLIN on time management and getting things done. The training was based on my personal time management style which is a combination of David Allen’s Getting Things Done and Sally McGhee’s Take Back Your Life which gives detailed instructions on how [...]

Mindset by Mary Beth Sancomb-Moran

It’s that time of year again. We’re just starting to get the hint of autumn in the air here in Minnesota, as the heat and humidity make way for drier air and cool nights. The faculty and staff are stepping up their pace in preparing for the new year, which is just around the corner. [...]

Moving on, change is in the air! by Matt

There are those of us who love change. It’s magical, exciting… the feeling of embracing a fresh new reality is exhilarating. ALA 2010: My Simple Plan for Keeping Close to Sane by (almost) Bald Trainer

The 2010 American Libraries Association conference is coming up next week and I have a plan to keep myself somewhat sane at this “canbeoverwhelming” conference. I plan to do one (or two) things each day and one day of no specific commitments: My schedule this year at ALA: Friday: Co-Presenting Preconference on Beyond F2f: New [...]

Beware! Labels Stick by mlibrarianus

Lunch time means a chance for me to catch up on Facebook friends and play a mindless game of Bejeweled 2 or Globs (which is especially relaxing these days since my focus in on Polaris and coordinating the training involved). Today I happened upon a post by the Central Library Manager, Nina Krzysko that included [...]

My project 365 at Frapto.Com by Stan Bogdanov

If you haven't heard about project 365, head over here to learn more about it. It's goal is pretty much for you to take one photo a day and end up with an album that will visually represent your year. For a while I have thought this is quite of a fascinating idea! So, I decided to join my Computers in Libraries' buddy, JD Thomas', website dedicated to the 365 project - Frapto.Com. It is a very nicely and simply organized site that houses the "365" collections of several people from all over the country (and the world?). To see and learn more go to http://www.frapto.com/ My first three submissions, after the jump!
