As suggested by Kathy Dempsey, author of The Accidental Library Marketer, here is a collection of Wordles based on the final program for each of the Internet Librarian conferences from 1997 to 2009.

Going back in time for this information was like an archeological dig through the the history of web development all the way back to the days before CSS and to when ITI hand coded the entire program in plain HTML.

When it comes to working with data on the web, there were no “good old days” to look back on with fondness in my opinion.

Camden County Youth Librarian Christen Orbanus put her hair color on the line when she challenged her young patrons to beat last years summer reading numbers.  She promised that if they met her goal of 1500 or more hours she would let them vote on a new hair color for her.

She had 91 kids sign up up for the program and together they read a combined total of 2,139 hours this summer. That is an average of 23.5 hours per participant.

The voting went on for a couple weeks with victory eventually coming to the kids who wanted to see Christen with silver hair.

Christen Orbanus, a teen librarian for the Camden County (New Jersey) Library System in charge of programming and collection development for 6th – 12th graders has come up with a good way to motivate her young patrons.

She has pledged that if her summer group racks up 1500 hours of reading, collectively, they can pick a color for her to dye her hair.

Her post is a result of much rumination following her attendance of Wayne Disher’s presentation at the Texas Library Association’s annual conference this spring.
