Internet Librarian After Dark

At Internet Librarian 2011 we will have two evening sessions – the traditional Gaming & Gadgets Petting Zoo on Sunday evening  and The Great Web Tools Face-Off on Tuesday night.

On Sunday night we will be gathering in one of the conference center ballrooms for refreshments and a chance to play with and explore gaming systems and new gadgets and gear. This special session is led by gamer/gadget gurus Aaron Schmidt, Amy Buckland (@jambina), Royce Kitts (@roycekitts), Erik Boekesteijn (@erikboekesteijn), and Jaap Van de Geer. Com join our gamers and gadget lovers for an evening of fun and playing. Bring your latest games and gadgets and try out each other’s. Discover if you are a secret guitar hero, winning Wii bowler, or rank as a dancing DDR expert.

On Tuesday night we have The Great Web Tools Face-Off from 7:30 PM until 9:00 PM.

There are tools, tools, tools, but this event features learn, learn, learn while having fun! Our panel has ideas, but be sure to bring yours too! If we want to improve collaborative work, productivity, data representation, and research, what are the best Web tools to use?

The Game Plan!

Three periods of play jam-packed with ideas, tips and tricks — and even penalties and power plays! Team 1 (Blue Jerseys) takes on Team 2 (Red Jerseys) with captains and players while referees keep the pace going, and there is additional color commentary and expert analysis between periods. The game will be fast-paced, so be ready to tweet your cheers.

Unwind BEFORE the Conference

If you are getting into town early for Pre-Conference workshops or just arriving on Sunday be sure to come by the Hilton for the annual Gaming & Gadgets Petting Zoo that will run from 5:30pm until 7:30pm on Sunday evening. Get hands on experience with new gadgets and play games, both analog and digital, with other attendees.

Bring your own gadgets to share and if you are looking to play with a specific gadget that you have not yet seen in person, be sure to ask on the Computers in Libraries Facebook page and maybe someone will bring it.

Gaming & Gadgets Petting Zoo 2010

Internet Librarian 2009, Oct 26-8, Monterey CA

il2009Hundreds of librarians, info pros, and ‘net savvy specialists will soon be heading to Monterey for the 13th annual Internet Librarian conference.  The buzz has already begun with our twitter stream (the tag is #IL2009), the new conference wiki, and several wonderful videos.  Last year Sean Robinson started filming in his IL2008 session and produced this video.  Recently the Shanachies produced this video. AND, speakers David Lee King and Michael Porter will be unveiling a new video at the conference next month.  Exciting.

The conference program this year features lots of familiar favorites as well as new exciting features:

New LibraryCamp Monterey at the Monterey Public Library, Saturday Oct 24th, 9:30-12:30.

Saturday & Sunday Workshops:  The popular Searchers Academy  and Web Managers Academy — full day content-refreshed workshops along with new workshops on how to understand client’s preferences and behaviors through focus groups, screencasting, getting the most for your library with Twitter or Storytelling (yes those are two different workshops), practical cloud computing, and more.

Popular Sunday evening networking at the  Gaming & Gadgets Petting Zoo with lots of gamers and gadget lovers sharing, playing, learning and having fun!  Join hosts Aaron Schmidt, Jenny Levine & Erik Boekesteijn and network with old friends and new acquaintances.

Fun Tuesday evening event — Rockin’ Battle Decks: Dealing with Digital Now & Beyond.  Enjoy presentations by experienced speakers who have never seen the slide deck they are speaking about until they take the platform.  Hear some terrific music, including the famous “23 Things” song from Richard Geiger & Tim De Wolf.  Listen to the judges response to the Battle Decks’ presenters and find out who they think is the top performer.

Networking informal dine-arounds with colleagues.

Cybertours in the exhibit hall where many library suppliers happily share their products and services.

Wonderful views of the Pacific Ocean, Monterey Bay, and the unique flora, fauna, animals and birds as well as walking trails, outdoor activities (kayaking, whale watching), and retail therapy!

Demco Introduced a New 4-Player Game Station

Though the Gaming Pavilion at the ALA Expo was notably devoid of video game suppliers this year, Demco’s Anthony Diaz showed me the latest design in library gaming stations.  The moon-rover design features four distinct gaming stations in one compact space, with lots of lockable cubby holes for gaming devices and peripherals, including the guitar Diaz is playing.  Retail price on the unit is $3600.  Review the specs here.

It's That Time Again…

Yep, we’re back for another Computers in Libraries conference. Today, Sunday, saw lots of people arriving in DC and settling in, while others were delayed by flight troubles. And there were a number of great pre-conference sessions today — including one by Yours Truly.

This evening there was another successful gaming session put together by Aaron Schmidt and Erik Boekesteijn. Lots of people gathered for pizza and playtime.
